Social workers

Social workers form relationships with people an assist them to live more successfully within their local communities by helping them find solutions to their problems.

Social work involves engaging not only with clients but their friends and families. Social workers also work closely with organisations such as the police, local authority departments, schools and the probation service.

Social services specialise in either adult or children services. Children and young people services the roles include providing assistance and advice to keep families together, working In children’s home, managing adoption and foster care processes, providing support to younger people who are about to leave care or who are at risk to themselves or others or In trouble with the law.

A person who has strong communication skills and interaction skills can become a good social worker because he or she has to communicate with various types
of people and inspire them.

Education is necessary to become a social worker as basic concepts and training can help them understand the practical issues and problems. In education they will be taught to understand how to understand problems. They will also need to understand and realise the need of improvement and changes that may be needed for the child or young person.

Social worker goes through the UK government which is then passed through to the local authority they work in many aspects such as foster care, residential care and respite care. Working with different organisations of care provisions allows them to help others going in and out of care or those who need help or a break going into respite care.

Foster carers
Some children may have many growing needs and in the role of a foster carer they would be expected to ensure a child: Receives good nourishment
Promote self-care and keep them safe from harm
Make sure they receive medical attention when needed
Cease from using physical retribution to discipline them

A foster carer would need to take into an account a child’s emotional needs they should encourage the child to build and have a good self-esteem, they should spend time with the child one to one to gain trust and respect from that child which then allows the young person to trust their carer. A foster carer should respect and nurture a child’s cultural, racial and religious identity they should encourage the child to express who they are and not follow in other footsteps. Facilitating contact with the child’s birth family will allow the child to have a choice to see their family or not, respecting the child’s wishes to not or may see their family is essential

A child’s education is important encouraging a child to value learning will allow them to better themselves for the future. Taking an interest in the child’s work and homework will inspire them to do better if needed as they know someone is praising them to do well. A foster carer should work closely with the child’s school allowing the carer to know if there is any issues that need dealt with or see to in a short amount of time. They should support the child’s attendance at school, if they want to stop of regularly getting to the route of the problem is essential a child’s attendance can affect their grades.

Encouraging a child to make friends will help them build their confidence and self-esteem; no child should sit in the house doing nothing and have no friends. Allowing them to socialise and build friendships by joining clubs and afterschool groups will allow them to make friends whilst doing something they enjoy. Understanding that being fostered may be hard for the child not being with their birth parents building relationships and gaining trust will allow the child to talk to you when needed. Support systems should be set up for a child and other family members who are struggling to deal with the occurring situation.

Foster care is run through the local authority they watch closely at the care provision provided. Local authority falls into the organisation of the government. http://www.barnardos.org.uk/fostering/what-is-fostering/foster-parent-responsibilities.htm Date accessed: 4.12.12
